At first, I couldn’t believe a miracle happened to me, and it happened so quick, it took me a minute to register it. But when it did, I realized how incredible of a miracle it really was.
Years ago, I had been working as an operator on a small printing press. The machine I was using was old and the sides were off of it, which made it easier to oil and fix. But it also made it slightly dangerous. All the cogs, gears, and springs were exposed, so I always had to be careful not to get anything caught.
But one day I wasn’t careful and something did get caught—my thumb! Without looking, I was going to turn the ink well knob, something I had done a thousand times before. But this time I missed the knob and got my finger caught between two nearby gears!
Thankfully, the gears were small (one smaller than the other), but they were still tightly interlocked. I felt my whole hand jerked violently down, and by the time I turned to see what happened, my right thumb had already come out below the gears. Instantly I grabbed my wrist and lifted up my thumb. There were black grease marks from the gears on my thumb, and I was staring at them, just waiting for theme to explode into bloody ribbons. (A little dramatic, I know!)
I waited 5, 10, 15 seconds, but nothing happened. When I got brave enough, I gently wiped away the grease (on both sides of my finger), and there was absolutely nothing underneath, not even a scratch.
For a long time, I never told anyone. I was a new Christian and had no idea that God would do a miracle like that for me. Maiming or losing a thumb (especially my right one) would have made my life so much more difficult. But that day he showed me his divine protection and power, and I’m still so grateful for it!
