Angel Dogs to the Rescue

Can animals really be used to provide supernatural protection and guidance? Judge for yourself.

A couple of years, my husband and I went to visit family. We found a small but comfortable Airbnb cottage in a large residential area about fifteen minutes from my sister’s house and settled in for our weeklong stay.

One dark, drizzly evening, as we drove back to the cottage, we started to bicker. Not wanting to lose my temper, as soon as we got to the Airbnb, I quickly put on my hoodie and left. I intended to go for a calming walk around the block.

I was so preoccupied with my thoughts, it was about fifteen minutes before I looked up and realized I had no idea where I was. I felt for my phone in the pouch of my now very damp hoodie, thinking to use the GPS to get back.

A pang hit my stomach when I realized I didn’t bring it. Here I was, lost in a strange town in the rain, and I had no idea how to get back.

I stopped in front of a dark house where a man sat in a pickup truck in the driveway. He was talking on his phone. I felt a little uneasy about it, but decided to wait for the man to finish his conversation so I could ask him for directions.

Just then, I heard loud barking, and when I turned to see, two large dogs were bounding towards me. It was hard to tell what breed they were, but one was black and the other white.

I’m a dog lover, but I’ve also been bitten before, so I stood still. They came trotting up right to me, and then started circling me. To my relief they seemed friendly enough, but before I could pay them any attention, the man finished his call and stepped out of his truck.

He looked at me, annoyed.

I said, “I’m sorry. I’m lost. Could you please tell me where Trotter Street is?”

He walked closer to me, and something about the way he looked at me made me feel really uneasy.

“No, I’ve never heard of Trotter Street,” he said. Just then, the black dog ran onto his lawn, squatted, and pooped.

“Really? You’re gonna let your dog do that in my yard?” the man said, an angry edge in his voice.

I put my hands up to show I didn’t want trouble. “Oh, these aren’t my dogs! They just showed up.” I’m surprised he believed me. Both of them were just hovering around my legs.

When he heard the dogs weren’t mine, his expression changed quickly and he softened his voice. “Why don’t you come on in the house then and dry off?”

I knew it was time to go. I started backing up, “No thank you. I need to find my way. I’m sure my husband is worried about me.”

I turned and started to walk fast. When I looked back over my shoulder, the strange man wasn’t following me, but both the dogs were. They came and flanked me on both sides.

As I moved quickly toward a street corner, the white dog bumped me on my right hip. I knew he was steering me in a direction. “Okay,” I said, and turned left. As I did, the black dog took the lead while the other stayed by my side.

As they led me on, I began to recognize where I was. In just a couple of minutes we were in front of the Airbnb.

I exhaled in relief, and the two dogs took off running ahead. They disappeared as quickly as they had come.

I’ll never forget that dark rainy night and those four-legged angels who saved me from danger and led me back to my husband.

Have you ever had an animal help you in way you thought might be supernatural?
